Mystery Interior II: Dining Room

Of the thousands of glass plate negatives by Milan P. Warner of Massachusetts, several of his interior photographs remain untitled and unidentified. This image is one of those examples. There are notable similarities between this room and the one posted last week, which you can find linked at the bottom of this article. This mystery room shares the same concept of a bow window and the same level of high-quality, artistically executed finishes. While it is not certain that it comes from the same home, it remains possible he may have taken photos a few rooms in a home at the time of his visit. All the way to the right, it appears the glass negative must have been broken or damaged causing the blacked-out area.

The dining table sits undressed, giving us a clear look at its generous proportions and suggesting it could be expanded with several leaves for larger gatherings. The surrounding chairs, upholstered in what appears to be leather, would have offered both durability and a comfortable, slightly more formal seating surface appropriate for a well-appointed dining room. The dining room table itself has very similar scroll patterns on it as some of the other woodwork in the room.

We don’t often see this in period photographs—a dining room floor left completely bare without a carpet—but here it gives us an unobstructed view of the surface below. The floor appears to be a fantastic example of Minton tile, or a close imitation, laid out in a richly patterned, highly fashionable arrangement that would have been very much in style at the time.

Floor tiles were produced in such a wide variety of shapes, colors, and patterns that they could be combined into almost endless configurations. Most homeowners and designers followed popular pattern books of the period, but the possibilities were nearly limitless. As Minton and other English makers set the standard for encaustic and geometric floor tiles, American and continental manufacturers quickly turned out close imitations “in the Minton style.” These copycat lines often borrowed the same motifs, color palettes, and layout diagrams, giving middle-class clients the look of a high-end imported floor at a more accessible price.

The mantel is bold and heavily detailed, giving the fireplace a strong visual presence in the room. The surrounding tiles are beautifully chosen and carefully arranged, adding a refined, decorative finish to the opening. The scroll pattern on the top of each column capitol is similar to the scroll pattern on the corners of the dining room table.

Looking very closely inside the firebox, is a very curious display of iron. Can anyone on the board identify this? The fender reveals a very unusual design execution. One might expect the center section of the rail to dip lower in a more conventional, symmetrical arrangement, but here the maker opted for this unexpected configuration instead, giving the whole ensemble a slightly eccentric, custom feel.

On the left and right of the mantel there appear to be two matching china cupboards or cabinets, either built-in or freestanding, designed as a pair. The woodwork carved on the pieces match the fireplace. Looking into the glass cabinets is a fun exercise to try and identify the items you recognize, and the ones you may not.

The overmantel includes glass-door cabinets housing pitchers and other objects, while the mantel itself holds the expected clock, statues, and vases. Can you identify the statues? It appears to be a bisque porcelain figure of a young woman with basket, possibly German or French.

In the mirror’s reflection, we can glimpse the opposite side of the room, where another cabinet holds a tall vase and a gas fixture hangs nearby. The double-columned niche framing the ewer or vase is actually part of the opening into the bow-windowed alcove that we’ll see later. To the left in the reflection you can see a door and transom window reflecting on the Lyncrusta wall covering and cut glass glass wall sconce dangerously close to the swinging door.

On the opposite side, you can still see the key left in the cabinet door. Atop the pitcher-filled case sits a single vase, while the wall behind appears to be finished in a Lincrusta-type pattern—though I’ve not yet been able to identify the exact design used here.

The top of the mantel is relatively simple in its execution, with the design band continuing above the cove moldings. This detail creates an extra sense of depth and layering that is rarely attempted in design today. If you look at the pattern of the cabinet to the right of the mantel, you will see it the same scroll pattern across it.

Overhead, the ceiling is divided into multiple panels, each one filled with a painted motif of Renaissance-inspired scrollwork, adding another refined decorative layer to the room.

A dark-toned twisted fruit bowl rests high atop the right-hand china cabinet.

Below, we get a nice view of the coffee or tea cups spread out across the countertop. It’s likely that these pieces were not only decorative, but also intended for actual use as part of the table service for dinner.

The radiator case is beautifully designed. Ornamental radiators and their covers not only softened the look of the heating apparatus, but also provided an additional surface to display objects and weave the equipment into the overall decorative scheme of the room.

Radiator screens were much more attractive than the what we would see today. Like everything late 19th century, it is always fantastic to see the variety of styles your functional items could be turned into to match rooms of any style.

Looking toward the center of the room, where the gas light fixture hangs, we can clearly see the painted central ceiling pattern.

The gas chandelier features the typical central drop that could be lowered closer to the table when needed more light. Here we can see its mix of differently colored glass globes, a treatment we’ve encountered before in other photo studies.

To the left and right of the curved bow-window nook are columned openings, each used as a display niche for a large ewer or vase. We saw the one on the other side earlier in the mirror reflection.

The custom scrollwork here echoes the designs from the other panels. There is also a small hook set into the horizontal beam—an intriguing detail that invites us to wonder what they once chose to hang there.

Just like the house we saw in the last article, this brass curtain pole follows the curve of the bow window, carrying richly patterned, fringed drapery.

In the curved nook sits a rocking chair, and behind it rises a pedestal supporting a very large vase. The windows are dressed much like the ones in the previous week’s post, with softly layered drapery and fringed window shades. Lying on the floor is a long tassel attached to a long string window shade pull.

Here is an example of a similar chair we see in the dining room nook. This style of twisted wood belongs to a whole family of spiral-turned furniture made possible by Cleveland inventor Moses Younglove Ransom. In the mid-1880s Ransom patented a machine that could mill thin wooden rods with a continuous twist and then “weave” right- and left-hand spirals together into lattice panels he called Moorish fretwork. Furniture makers quickly adopted his patented spirals for rockers, hall stands, and room dividers like the one seen here. Period buyers could order the same interlaced spiral panels and components from trade catalogues such as the Buffalo Grille Co. catalogue of Moorish Fretwork from the 1890s, issued by the firm that succeeded C. S. Ransom & Co. in marketing these patented designs.
