5060 Lower Apalachee Rd, Madison, GA 30650
Built in 1911, The Historic Apalachee School house represents a fine example of a rural community schoolhouse. According to locals, it was built in 90 days for $2490.00. Situated in Apalachee, one of Morgan County, Georgia's earliest settlements, this Georgian Revival, wood-framed building stands two stories tall and features a T-shaped plan housing three classrooms and a second-floor auditorium with a stage. From the National Register of Historic Places, The Apalachee School is significant in architecture being used for a rural elementary school in creating an impressive building connoting the importance of education to the small community. The building retains the central portico and most of its original materials and spaces, including the auditorium. In addition to serving as the school, it has been used as a community meeting space and a place for entertainment. With over 4800 sq. ft., this unique property houses its original chalkboards, bead-boards ceilings, hardwood floors and over 12 ft. ceilings on the main floor. Updates include a new well, updated HVAC systems, and a metal roof. Surrounded by mature hardwoods, and two historic churches, this property can offer multiple uses possible, but may require a rezone or variance- residential, public meeting space, receptions, art studio, and gallery space.
