Arcadia is a most unusual conversion of a pair of High Victorian Gothic cemetery chapels designed by Thomas Talbot Bury, a noted pupil of Pugin, in about 1870. Both chapels are of stone construction with Bath stone dressings beneath steeply pitched tiled roofs and are linked by a cloistered reception hall with a central doorway on each side offering access to the front and exit to the rear.
Once inside this impressive hall, distinguished double wooden doors to the right lead into the principal reception room, where steps lead to a raised wooden floor with hand rail and screen. The room is vaulted to full height with a five sided apse and stained glass windows, arched windows with exposed brick work detailing and Corinthian stone corbels to the arched braced roof.
The second chapel is to the left of the hall. Steps lead up to an inner lobby where the stairs to the first floor are located. There is an under stairs cupboard housing the gas-fired boiler and an airing cupboard with hot water cylinder. Immediately ahead is the kitchen, which is fitted with a range of wall and floor units with tiled splash backs and worktops over; there is an integrated AEG oven and gas hob with extractor hood over, a stainless steel sink and space for white goods. The fully tiled shower room features mosaic flooring and is fitted with a corner shower cubicle with curved glass screen, WC, wash basin with Art Deco taps set in granite worktop with cupboards beneath concealing an integrated washing machine and a ladder heated towel rail. Bedroom 2 is located at the end of the lobby. The room is open to full height with carved stonework and exposed brickwork, with inspiring stained glass windows on three of the four walls.
The first floor master bedroom is vaulted to full height and features magnificent stained glass windows with a rose window, carved wooden detailing, exposed brickwork. A free standing roll top bath and wash basin are positioned on tiled flooring.
Arcadia is to be found within Charlton cemetery nestling beneath the impressive Dover Castle. Located in the historic town of Dover the property is within walking to the town centre, Castle, sea front, Port of Dover, Cruise terminal and the Dover Priory train station with its high speed links to London are all very close. There is excellent road access to the A2/M2 & A20/M20. Also only a short drive away is the Eurotunnel terminal.
The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens rose beds surrounded by a gravelled path. Further shrub and herbaceous beds providing good levels of privacy, a terraced area sits adjacent to the pond and is ideal for al fresco dining. There is even a crypt which is currently used as a garden storage and the property also has the huge benefit of off road parking.
