This photograph, titled “Grace’s Parlor,” gives us a late-19th- or early-20th-century view of her sitting room. There are several fascinating details to explore here as we take a deeper look into the picture. While much simpler than some of the other rooms we have seen recently, including the room in the previous article, this is still a richly layered Victorian interior—modest only by comparison.

Let’s start with the fantastic gas light fixture and what appear to be acid-etched globes. The pattern and design are beautiful, with delicate ornament worked across the glass. One can never tire of studying the intricate details on fixtures like this, where even a practical object becomes part of the room’s decoration.

This wicker chair sits on wall-to-wall carpeting, with additional throw rugs layered over it. You can see that the carpet has a field pattern with a border pattern cut around it, a very popular carpet design for this era.

The room is covered in wall and ceiling paper, creating a fully patterned interior surface from floor to ceiling. The woodwork is painted a light color, if not white, and if you look to the left, you can see a smooth glass doorknob with a skeleton key in the lock below it.

Hanging dramatically from the picture rail above the door, we see a framed print tilted strongly outward so the person below could more easily admire the photograph.

This is a fascinating gilded photograph or print. It may be a portrait of the children of the home, though without additional documentation we cannot say for certain. Its prominent placement and ornate frame suggest it held personal or sentimental importance within the room.

As we look closely at the picture rail, we can see that it appears to be painted in a gradient effect. Some picture rails could even be purchased pre-decorated or gilded, adding another ornamental layer to the room. As we often see in period photographs, framed pictures were commonly suspended from thin wire. Decorative picture cord with tassels was also used, but just as often, a simple, thin wire seems to have done the job.

Let’s focus on the wallpaper, frieze paper, and ceiling paper. All three appear to use the same overall pattern, adapted slightly to suit each surface. Notice how the lower portion of the frieze curves into the bay window. Also worth noting is the way the paper was pressed neatly into the rounded plaster corner bead.

You can see here that the lower portion of the bay was still treated as part of the frieze, while the ceiling of the bay uses the ceiling paper. The lace curtains are hung from a hammered brass or metal pole.

The window shades are drawn here, probably to filter the light for the photograph. However, it was not uncommon for window shades to be lowered in order to keep direct sunlight out of the house. Filtered light was an important part of 19th-century domestic interiors. It helped reduce heat in the room, protected furnishings and decorative objects from fading, and, as some period books suggested, created a more desirable, “soft mellow glow.” Hanging from the window shades, you can also see two tassel pulls.

Are these deflated balloons? We saw similar ones in “Clara’s Parlor” when we visited a few months ago.

Decorating with “colonial” influence had become a definite trend by the late 19th century, as earlier American forms and household objects were increasingly admired and reused as part of fashionable interior decoration. Even if this spinning wheel was placed here primarily as a decorative piece rather than for practical use, it still reflects that broader colonial revival taste, in which old-fashioned domestic objects were valued for the sense of history and sentiment they brought to a room.

Also notice how the seams of the carpet border were carefully cut and fitted to follow the curve of the bay window.

Framed portraits of the family children adorn the walls. What is especially interesting here is how reflective the center of the pattern appears on both the far left and far right of the image. This may suggest that the wallpaper had a metallic fill or reflective element worked into the design, catching the light differently than the surrounding paper.

A calling card tray sits in the foreground with several items stacked inside it. To the right, the frame appears to hold a cabinet card. It is difficult to tell whether the frame is meant to imitate white birch wood or whether it is covered in pleated fabric, but either way, it adds another small decorative layer to the room.

The carpet-covered foot cushion, or footstool, was an extremely popular feature in interiors of this era, and we see them again and again in period photographs. This example appears to have been made from the very same carpet used on the floor, which raises an interesting question: were these made by the carpet manufacturers for the homeowner, or did the homeowner have them fashioned from leftover scraps?

These items sit on a draped Eastlake table near the wicker chair. To the right of the chair, there must be a window, as a narrow band of light can be seen peeking through onto the floor behind it.

This photograph shows the room from the opposite side. Unfortunately, the image is blurred, which makes it a little difficult to study, but there are still some wonderful details to see. Perhaps the camera or stand was bumped when the photograph was taken.

To the right, we see a doorway covered by a portière. The seven deflated balloons, previously seen near the window, appear to have been moved and hung from the gas chandelier for this view of the room.

There is a circular vent cut into the frieze area, perhaps used for cross-ventilation. If the house was not equipped with central heating, this may have helped move warmer air from the room into an adjoining space or possibly to the room above. We sometimes see small wall or ceiling vents like this in period interiors, often used to help circulate heat from fireplaces, stoves, or other localized heat sources.

A piano sits neatly in the corner, with a small statue placed at one end. A framed print is displayed on an easel nearby, with several smaller photographs tucked into it.

The draped mantel holds a mantel clock and cabinet card photographs, just as we see in so many period homes. On the left is a small statue, perhaps part of a matching set similar to the one displayed on the piano.
