From the National Register:
3 39th Street c.1887 contributing building
This building was the home of Charles Horstmann, a vice-president of the Schmulbach Brewery. The two-and-a-half
story, Queen Anne/Eastlake house is situated on an irregular plan and has a multi-gabled roof with dormers. The
house sits on a sandstone block foundation and is clad in aluminum siding. The southern elevation has a projecting
front gable at the eastern end. The front door and one 1/1 double hung wooden window are recessed at the projecting
(eastern) bay, and a 1/1 double hung wooden window is located at the western bay. At the second story, there is a pair
of 1/1 double hung vinyl windows at the eastern bay, and a single 1/1 double hung wooden window at the western
bay. A partial box gutter divides the second story from the upper half story. Three stained-glass windows with decorative trim, brackets, and surrounds are centered on the gable end. A second gable is situated to the northwest
and has decorative trim and a half-round opening. The opening is infilled, and it is undermined if originally had a
window or a wooden ornament. The decorative millwork trim remains intact. At the half story of the western bay, a
gabled dormer is vertically aligned with the windows below. Patterned wood shingles cover the west and east walls of
the dormer. A 1/1 double hung window (vinyl) is situated at the southern elevation of the dormer. The gable is
detailed with decorative millwork. The original front porch has been removed, but a hip-roofed side porch at the
eastern elevation has been enclosed. Partially interior chimneys are located at the eastern and western elevations.
This house has many details on the secondary elevations. It has a large setback from the sidewalk and is fronted by
grass lawn. The resource retains general historic architectural integrity and contributes to the overall historic
character of the district.
