4 McNutts Island Rd, Shelburne, NS B0T 1W0
Island living with historic charm. This historic property was built circa 1857 and was given the name New Jerusalem Farm. This two bedroom building is one of the oldest remaining structures on the island. The farmland can still be distinguished, thanks to the beautiful rock walls, which outline its original place on the land, and surround the remaining apple orchard. Complete with a full kitchen and washroom this solar, wind and battery powered property could be just the get away you need. Enjoy your 845 feet of water frontage fishing or kayaking in the ocean. Spend your days traveling the biking roads and exploring history. McNutts Island is named after Col. Alexander McNutt, a British army officer, colonist and land agent, who lived there in the late 1760's. During WWII, Shelburne Harbour was chosen as an alternative port, should Halifax run into trouble. Two 10 inch M1888 guns and baccaracks were built on McNutts Island to protect the harbour. Although abandoned after the war, they still remain. Cape Roseway lighthouse can be found on McNutts island and used to host a school and post office. While exploring the area around the lighthouse, remember to take your eyes off the raw ocean beauty for a few moments to look down at the countless names carved in the rocks, by soldiers and lighthouse keepers past. This property is water access only and can be reached by launching at the local wharf.
