William Wyllis Dewey (1808-1898) was born in Connecticut though a resident of New York from his youth. He came to Royalton and bought this 168 acre farm after his marriage to Amanda Harland in 1831. They lived out their long lives years here, raised 9 children and attended the Baptist church.

A fairly typical vernacular Greek Revival house of the Temple and Wing form, with most of its original carpentry intact despite some minor alteration. It’s in a very quiet area of western New York next to a large wildlife preserve. Pretty nice!

      Thanks JimH,
This house has exceptional interior window/door casings, and is abt 20mins from my house!
The Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge is an incredible place, especially for bird watching! There is nothing like seeing endless waves of thousands of Canada Geese migrating from this staging place!

I knew I had ancestral relatives in Royalton, and I found them right next door to this house on old maps. Two brothers and a sister with their own families who came there about the same time Dewey did. I imagine the birds 180 years ago and they must have had plenty of goose or duck for dinner!

Lovely house. I love all the woodwork. But what is that in Photo #23? Looks like a drop door with holes to the outdoors? Or am I just seeing that wrong? What is that?

Maybe I’ll have to take a little drive sometime to ck it out (without seeming too creepy to the residents)!
