There’s some ornamental architectural drama on the exterior that keeps this relatively simple Queen Anne cottage from being classified as a folk style dwelling. The side bay features a one of a kind raised roof platform that probably either featured a finial originally or wrought iron cresting on the top. Looks like the builder took some generic house plans and decided to embellish the exterior with lavish wood ornaments to make it “showy”. Unfortunately, it was superfluous ornament of this kind that rendered everything Victorian as stylistically obsolete within a generation of when this house was built. At least for a while, houses and buildings in many American communities took on a fantasy “Disneyland” appearance but rapid changes in tastes after 1910 caused countless examples of ornamental architecture to be demolished or stripped of their details by the mid-20th century. Luckily, some of the details still survive here. The absence of a staircase photo may indicate it is of the enclosed variety and lacking in fancy millwork details.

The interior is interesting but ornamentally a bit more sedate than the exterior. I would be curious to see a period photo of the exterior showing the original appearance. Hurdland is a tiny hamlet in northeastern Missouri of about 157 residents. The nearest “big” city is Kirksville with about 17,500 residents and two colleges. Kirksville is about 18 miles to the west of Hurdland.

    • I think the exterior is absolutely gorgeous! Upon seeing it I had so much hope for the interior but was rather disappointed, but all of that is cosmetic and can be fairly easily remedied. All in all, it’s a very neat little house with a fantastic price tag.

Oh my Goddess, it’s adorable! A little exterior color, a bit of landscaping and it would be perfect!

I think there should be a lightning rod on the top of this home. Was a pretty fancy home for where it is. Possible it was built for someone who was sincerely loved. This price point is tempting. Gotta love Missouri

Ok, this is another house I can’t understand why there isn’t a 1 in front of the price. It does look as if Hurdland it’s in the middle of no where (perfect if you ask me), but, if you were retired or worked from home it would be wonderful! Looks move in ready.
