Carter's Tavern, a Halifax County 1773 historic landmark where George Washington is known to have "sup" here, is for sale. The three-story Country-Federal style structure is located on the scenic River Road, Operated then as "ordinary" (modern-day bed and breakfast), the present owners, one an architect, have labored the past 15 years to preserve and restore the tavern and its woodwork and original faux painting. Beyond cosmetics, the owners added modern conveniences including bathrooms, a kitchen with modern, yet concealed, appliances, central heating and air, and upgraded electrical and plumbing. Their project was featured in Early American Life magazine in 2014. "You are walking into a time capsule, the house reserved to the day it was built. Nothing has changed in it. You see original woodwork, original painting and original floors. The paint was put on in 1800, and it is the same paint that's still there," one of the owners stated in the article. The first floor is divided into four main rooms and a stair hall. In the wing is the "Tap Room" A secondary enclosed stair leads to innkeeper's private quarters. Three chimneys serve 5 fireplaces.
