This very special, very rare, very early, small vernacular building is not for everyone. For some, the historic value and preservation opportunity will be evident. It could be definitely "love at first sight". In fact, one might hear, "I can't wait to own and cherish Anderton's Desire". This delightful ca. 1803 dwelling is considered one of the oldest wood frame houses within the Historic District. Each room speaks of the history it has seen. Each room features its own unique fireplace and handsome pine flooring. In fact, a hidden cupboard is found in the Dining room mantel. The formerly detached summer kitchen which is the last in the telescopeing style,was joined (about 1840) by a frame hyphen. The present kitchen is located here with a brick floor. The "Summer Kitchen" with fireplace also boosts a brick floor. Original architectural details and features abound. Anderton's Desire is so "pure" one asks, "How did it remain so untouched?" It is very much like stepping back in time for there are few modern amenities.The approachable size of the house encourages one to slowly and carefully let it teach the preservationist its' needs. It would make a perfect weekend (or year round) location for those looking for that small preservation project that fulfills the preservationist's dreams. This lovely property is nestled in the heart of the Historic District of East New Market where one will find many beautifully restored early buildings. The list is long and impressive. History is quite important to East New Market. "During the second half of the 17th c., a small village in northern Dorchester County, Maryland, originally inhabited by Indians, was colonized and the town presently known as Historic East Market was established. The town was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. There is a charming log outbuilding which stands nearby on this half-acre village lot.
