18+ acres in a great location with a jewel of a old home. A must see! The land is open, with double road frontage, near the new by pass for easy access to Athens and shopping, there is an old store on the property, the yard has very large old oaks. The tax records say the house was built in 1860 but we think it is older than that. The house needs up dating and TLC but the potential is unbelievable. Security system in place.

Oh wow, right out of a novel. Take a stroll with the street view; I loved my virtual visit to the south.

I like its grittiness the way it is. It has had some unfortunate “updates” but they’re easy enough to make disappear. Nice house.

I’m not seeing anything to suggest this is that early. Yup, feeling better. 🙂

Windows, Im referencing homes of that age here in SC, seen some like that built around 1817, and the staircase details and original mantels. These early ones are rare frankley.

The south continued building to-the-floor windows like that including those style mantels into the 1880’s (some of the windows have been seen in early 1900 homes too.) The staircase is pretty simple but they tended to be in the rural areas. Not saying 1860 is spot on but I’m not seeing anything that could date it only to the pre-1820’s.

  4. I would love to see the inside of the old store! The thought of having that on the property fascinates me.

Restoring the store would be a priority for me.

Very nice! Beyond the updates, the house just feels more authentic than most, and the setting is really lovely.
There’s a Presbyterian church, cemetery and old schoolhouse just down the road. The community here is called Paoli, first settled by Scots-Irish in 1788 and named after their former home in Pennsylvania. The road was a native trail back then, and the original homes and church were log cabins, now gone.
Recently listed on the National Register as the Paoli Historic District, most of the extant houses are dated after 1850. The posted home is known as the Long house, and the store was the Threlkeld Grocery which operated until 1976! The individuals that built the structures aren’t named, though Samuel Long (1753-1822) was among the early settlers. Descendants of the pioneers still attend the church and live nearby.
