Oh what a beautiful house! It looks as if the porch is dates a few decades after the house was built. The house needs a bit of work but would be well worth the effort in my opinion!

Italianates are so elegant and proud — my favorite style. This one seems in good shape outside, I think I would do the siding a light salmon to emphasize the white trim; rethink the fencing, maybe iron on the perimeter? The inside would have a joyous cosmetic uplift, the basics are in place in the basement, the kitchen would need to return to a less modern time, and this could be a showplace again. I love it. . .

I think the black and white exterior is SO elegant tho. 🙂 The effect is almost surreal somehow; and I LOVE the all white Queen Anne porch. Thumbs up if you appreciate a mostly white big Victorian – maybe even more so than a colorful house.

Except for the porch railing, some beautiful exterior details here. As well, some nice features inside (if not all whitewashed). I particularly like the arched doorway with the pocket doors. I know, many don’t agree, but I can’t help it, I just love naturally finished woodwork. Anyway, a very nice place.

I think we saw this one when last on the market – it sold for $75k in 2015. Still a fine home in great shape for the money. Cold Brook is a small hamlet in the Town of Russia, north of Poland and west of Norway.

Nice home. Could be lived in and then when you had some changes they could be made then. In fact I think it is even better than my first opinion. It is nice. Seems to have a wood pantry which I like. Most looks clean and bright.

A bit of color on the exterior to bring focus to the copious trim details would be in order and maybe a bit less wallpaper, but this is a fine and lovely home. Some TLC and the new owner will have quite a showplace!

That’s a good buy, isn’t it? The foundation alone is a work of art. I still cringe when I see paneling (every room except the kitchen in my first house had been paneled) but tearing it out isn’t too difficult. The other features more than make up for it.

    Pretty old Italianate

This is my second home. I purchased it in 2015 with great aspirations to restore. Unfortunately I didn’t have as much time (its about 3 hours away from my primary residence) to spend there to work on it. It’s a true gem that just needs some sprucing up. It breaks my heart to let it go but hopefully someone with as much love of old homes as i do will appreciate it and bring to it’s potential! I too wanted to add a cast iron fence and remove the awful panelling and wallpaper and eventually bring some color to the outside. It was a privilege to even own it for a few years. Its funny – I’m on this site almost daily – to see my own house on here!

It’s a great house Dave, and it deserves to be here. You were spot on for sure buying this rad place, and I genuinely feel for you having to part with it.

How nice to hear from the person who did so much to restore this lovely property. You clearly did much to bring this old lady back to where she came from with additions to make her 21st Century viable. My consolations on finding it necessary to give her up. I look forward to seeing your future posts on OHD.

Thanks Nancy! I really enjoy this site and have been looking at the posts for years! It is here where I first saw this house (I believe it was in a sampler). I really am sad to part with it.

Dave, if you would be so kind — what are the all inclusive annual taxes ?

      2
      • Dave says: 11 comments

They are about $2700 a year which is quite reasonable for NY. There isn’t a lot of land though which accounts for that..the yard is very small.

thank you. For me, small lot is a good thing!
          but darn the taxes!
My current home is worth about $320k, w annual taxes of $3,800, up from $2,800 the year prior.
I am spoiled in that regard.

I agree with Rosewater, the exterior is perfect as is. I love painted ladies but not every house need be an entire crayon box, white is so special, beautiful and elegant and perfect for this house, and a few others. But whoever buys it can paint it anything they want.???

What a beautiful house!! I wish it were in a warmer location with more land, but if it were it would cost a lot more. Still, it’s a bargain for all it includes. The magnificent wood floors, high ceilings, the fireplaces, the staircase, the shape of the rooms all feel light, spacious and elegant. It needs work, but will be beautiful when restored. The exterior is exquisite.

A beautiful house, and a great opportunity for someone. We painted our 1886 Queen Anne in different shades of green, but I do appreciate the white ones as well; my grandmother’s house was nearly identical to Harry Truman’s home, white with black window sashes and black screens. Those houses remind me of old times…

It’s for sale on eBay! Yours truly just purchased it…lol. But Holy Moses, look at how beautiful! This is why homes should not be painted all one color, the details really stand out in the old photo.
