I love today’s postcard image. Showing someone’s creative paint skills by making a pattern on an otherwise uniform shingle pattern.

Two 18th century homes, one in Rhode Island and one in Pennsylvania:

First, the beautifully restored Waterman/Winsor House, a 1710/1780 center chimney with a gambrel-roofed ell in Greenville: eight working fireplaces, great early floors, and nice woodwork on just under 2 acres for $725,000

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/85-Austin-Ave-Greenville-RI-02828/65966896_zpid/

And second, a 1740-ish wonderful and stately Georgian stone house in Phoenixville, near Valley Forge, on 13 acres for $950,000. This National Register home served as officers’ quarters during the American Revolution (note the connection to George Washington in the realtor’s description) and later as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The five-bay center hall retains much of its early fabric.

Love them both! I did spend an inordinate amount of time trying to look at the oven that appears to be attached to the fireplace. Anyone have any ideas about that?

1913 Carnegie library building (Italian Rennaissance Revival w/ other influences), Kendallville, Indiana, $250,000… would make an amazing house:

Wow, that is a very nice looking building in good shape for what seems like not a lot of money relatively speaking. Wish I had a good reason to live there.

yes, I could see myself there. Just the exterior view, somewhat Japanese to me, would be so welcoming to come home too. And then there is the amount of books I own, why wouldn’t I want an ex library with such a heritage in its design.

I’m not sure if Kelly allows off-market listings, but this was active just a week ago, maybe the sellers got cold feet? Anyway, its in Medford, MA, and the listing price was $684,800, a little high in my opinion. It was built in 1926, as the builder write the build date on the plaster wall in the living room next to the front door.

My former wife and I sold the house to the current occupants for $440k in 2017, it was bought for $225k. If I had completed the remaining renovations, like fixing the foundation, new basement floor slab, and family room and office in the basement then it would be well worth $750k with the additional square 350 sf added to the original homes 1,263sf.

Here is the link. If Kelly want to make this a featured house, I have the 2017 photos that we paid to have taken, and also the pre-renovation 2002 photos.

Clifton Neighborhood of Cincinnati Ohio

Beautiful Second Empire. Interior is beautiful and could use some grand antiques.

$975,000

Another Clifton house.

Interior has been modernized but it is really dramatic. I usually cringe at painted woodwork, but I’m a sucker for the blue and lacquer-black color scheme.

That porch on the Greendale Ave house! Wow. The whole thing is beautiful. And the Thrall St one is amazing–it’s so difficult to do a modern spin on a Victorian but that is perfect. I agree about the woodwork but it’s all so nicely done.

I REALLY didn’t expect to like the house on Thrall, but I do! It’s very well done, IMO. I like that gridded shower door! *giggle* (I suppose it’s a little weird to mention that, considering the entire house, but it really caught my eye) And to add to weird observations, I would put different lights in the kitchen. They look too big to me.

Seriously though, I smiled through the entire listing.

I wonder if those ceilings in the Greendale house are restored originals of a design that was once there, or copies of another one. They sure do look like they were executed in the 19th century. Everything about that design looks correct. If copies, HUGE kudos to whomever put it together.

The house at 361 surprises me with it’s color scheme interior. Surprisingly, I’m ok with it. Not something I want for my house but a modern style that isn’t so horrible. I like the creativeness of it. I know its pulling off the gray craze, but I like the modern papers and dark ceilings and unique lighting.

Only critique i have on this entire execution is I do hate they put the dining room in the front parlor. Dinging room looks silly there. That should be next to the kitchen with the swinging door and built ins.

This is my first link exchange, so go easy on me. 🙂

This is my neighbor’s house. We are literally in the middle of Civil War country. 501 S East St, Culpeper, VA, belonged to the Hill family (of Gen. A.P. Hill fame) and was used as a hospital and a Union Army headquarters at different times. Lee rallied troops and launched Gettysburg from a couple miles away. We’re pretty certain if we dug around the yards along the railroad tracks behind the house we might find, uh, … well, just remember amputation was a popular remedy back then.

I *think this is still on the market – it’s not on the realtor’s site, but it is on Redfin, Zillow, etc. The current owner bought it in March, did a BUNCH of interior work and now here we are.

If I could dig up $1.25 million, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

1905, San Francisco, CA, 2,350,000
It tears me up that the realtor is trying to rally the troops to bring their contractor and design team.
What interesting architecture for so early. I would think it was post modernism for the over-reaction of the steep roof and three in a row! How neat. I would love to see someone come along and enjoy the house as it is, perhaps change out some of the white paint with some beautiful colors, on the fireplace and moldings-accentuate the design.

Those cross supports are contemporary with the new roof and are wholly unnecessary. I would straight away remove them wim. A pity they will have left scars on the original timbers. Zen room heaven as is. Cool. Great house generally. Too bad it’s doomed to be utterly gutted.

This house was on the site in December 2020 (not sure if page still exists for supporters).

The price has been reduced and the new listing photos and 3D tour provide a much better view of the interior rooms and details.

The rope going up to the pull-chain light fixture above the stair is pretty clever 🙂 .

Thanks for sharing!

1813, Chester, SC, 1,650,000
From the listing: “sellers have served as stewards for this old homestead during the past 28 years of ownership. Two historical Chester County landmarks dating from the early to mid-1800’s were moved to the property and joined to create this charming farmhouse…several log outbuildings that have been relocated to the property. All circa early 1800’s”
Set on 90 acres with a 7 acre pond. I love the view below:

Backdate those 2 recent crystal pendant lights & I would believe these were photos from a 1967 Better Homes and Gardens!

Someone could do serious research on how differently the brains of time capsule homeowners are wired that enables them to resist every single novelty in decorating over and over again for an entire lifetime! I can never stop considering “upgrades”.

This one has “evolved” a bit over the years… it would be fun to see what it originally looked like when new. Quite bold for its time, perhaps influenced by the work of Louis Curtiss?

I have the chance to buy the oldest home in my small town. It was built to house whatever teacher was teaching at the village school. It’s just so compact and neat I can’t pass it up, not to mention next to nobody around here takes much interest in history. Anyway my small town has very sketchy records going this far back. I would estimate it was built around 1860-1870 using local quarry stone.
Any ideas on a rough build date? Home is in Avoca Wisconsin, and pictures are in my album titled “Teacher house “.
Thanks for any opinions! 🙂

The WHS file says 1860 and I can believe that. The Italianate school across the street was built in 1858 and expanded in 1876, the oldest public school in the state still in use.

Yes, the old school across the street is now our village office, police station, and community center. It’s a very handsome building and house IMO.
My wife and I happened to meet the owner by chance (she lives out of town) and she mentioned she would be selling the home after the new year. We jumped on it. 🙂

$30K price drop on this 1900 Victorian in Louisville, GA, just down the street from ‘Louise’, the Renovation Nation project that, sadly, burned. 4000 SF, $250K, lots of nice woodwork. I really like this house a lot. To me all it needs is a garage.

First time sharing a link. This 1925 Tudor is fascinating!

The interior (except for kitchen & baths) appears nearly all original and in excellent condition. So much outstanding natural woodwork and those leaded/stained glass windows are what really sets this one apart! The pattern in the stained glass suggests gothic arch windows that would be found in a church and repeats throughout the house.

The exterior and grounds are all very nicely done.

You do have a knack for finding the best of this era! I love the “Mediterranean” entry doors–classic early 70’s! The interior is perfect; the only discordant note is the ginormous flat screen seen in the family room. Aside from that (and porch decor) it’s pretty much like time travel!
