This house has great curb appeal. The view from the front porch is interesting, though. You could drink your coffee and look out over the roof of a Piggly Wiggly. (Some people would balk at that, but my family has an inside Piggly Wiggly joke, so it actually made me a little sentimental. 😛 )

As far as exteriors go, this one is my favorite of the day.

    • The view of the Pig is… not the best, but Platteville is built among the beautiful bluffs of the Driftless Region, surrounded by small farms. If you look past the Pig, there’s a small bluff on the other side with a fairly tree-filled neighborhood. Our downtown is beautiful too 🙂

I automatically liked the outside but was surprised by the elegant interior details. It was probably the finest house around when it was first built.

Interesting house, developmentally, unless it is as simple as it appears to be, which I tend to doubt given how few “simple” and straightforward houses on OHD usually are. This house IMO started out as an unbracketed Greek Revival with a side hall entrance that ran the length of the initial house (2 large rooms along a hallway), to its rear service wing. It may even have been wood originally. Then it got a nice makeover, possibly with brick siding, and possibly at which time the seeming “front” verandah was added along with the floor-to-ceiling windows. The door to the far left of the main block of the house was likely only a window prior to that time. Italianate brackets were likely added at about that time, to all main parts of the then extant house except the very rear of the original building, now the left side of the house. How things developed from there was too chaotic to even guess at. But I have my doubts that this house began as a brick house with a 2-story verandah that is now and was then the front of the house. Would love to see an original photograph of the house if anyone can find one of it in its earliest incarnation.
