Don't buy an old house with lots of intact original details if your intention is to alter and update it. Buy something that already suits your tastes or something that has previously been altered (and which you can alter again).

Old houses retaining their original physical and stylistic integrity are disappearing quickly... please don't contribute further to their rapid decline. Leave them for those who value them as they are and wish to restore rather than remodel them. The words restore and remodel are not interchangeable.

Put serious thought into whatever changes you do make rather than aping whatever is currently fashionable. Let the true style of the house be your guide (rather than an enemy to be conquered).
