I dream of a home that's a little bit cottage and a little bit castle. Grew up in 19th-century homes from the time I was about 1-year old and inherited a love of the past from my mom. My current fascinations are Gothic Revival and French Eclectic, but I have an appreciation for tons of different historical periods and architectural styles. Needless to say, I've fallen in love with plenty of different home-types over the years. Time in the Minneapolis and Chicago areas, for example, had me drooling over big, old, stone Richardsonian-style Romanesques. Arts and Crafts styles also interest me, but I tend to prefer British-inspired versions over American, due to the amount of light individuals like C.F.A. Voysey were able to achieve in their interior designs. There are a lot of houses I'd be willing to visit for a while; but these days, any house I would choose for myself would definitely need to capitalize on light.

Let your entry sing a song that lets everyone know they've arrived somewhere unique! That's what my mom did with the foyer in her Queen Anne. Once she and my dad acquired that house, she spent hours and hours stripping off every bit of white paint on the open stairwell, side window frame, and French doors; re-stained the wood underneath to bring back warmth; and found just the right light fixture to hang. From the minute you step inside the house, that foyer provides a timeless, gracious, and elegant sense of welcome. You know you've arrived somewhere special.
