The Colonial Revival’s popularity ran from 1880 to 1960. The most identifying feature is a symmetrical facade, 10% are asymmetrical. There are various subtypes of Colonial Revival: asymmetrical (some are confused with Queen Anne’s), hipped roof with full-width porch (often confused with foursquare, which is the form not the style), hipped roof without full-width porch, side-gabled roof (most common), centered gable, gambrel roof (often called Dutch Colonial), second-story overhang (referred to as Garrison), one-story and three story.
The best book to determine house styles is A Field Guide to American Houses by Virginia and Lee McAlester. You can also visit Antique Home Style to read more.
