  1. I live near Lampasas and worked there for several months recently. It’s a small town, has a fairly active downtown square, swimming beach, parks, lots of shops and lots of opportunities for starting a business. It’s about 1.25 hours from Austin (and much lower cost of living & more conservative), 25 minutes from Copperas Cove and 35 minutes from Ft. Hood/Killeen. Has the usual small-town problems. No state income tax. Easy to start a business, minimal regulations, and there’s always the possibility of secession should the rest of the USA go down the wrong path. Very conservative town, never a traffic jam 🙂

Also, there are the following in Lampasas: community center where they offer a few college courses, a factory that is always hiring, good homeschooling laws, decent public school (!), a Curves exercise/gym, McDonald’s/Schlotzky’s/Pizza Hut, Walmart, Cato’s, locksmithhs, sign shops, USPS/FedEx/UPS mailing shop, USPS, several Protestant churches, at least 1 Catholic church with thrift shop and food pantry, a couple dozen other restaurants, the usual service stations & car repair shops, vets for your animals, and an HEB (a fabulous grocery store!) You won’t have to go into Austin or the other big towns unless you want to.
