Built before 1920. This residence was once the home of Dr. Perry Watson Miles family. In addition to his practice, Dr. Miles served many years on the local school board. He passed in 1947. His son, P.W. “Watt” Miles Jr., raised here, served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and founded a local newspaper — The Commercial Appeal. Watt passed in 1973.
The property was converted to three apartments sometime before 1960. However, with much of its original trim and fireplaces intact, its return to an elegant single-family residence is anticipated.
From 1980 until 2018, the home was owned by the Martin Donelson family. This family was descended from John Donelson, a frontiersman, who co-founded Fort Nashborough — now Nashville Tennessee. Martin Donelson Jr. was a physician and flight surgeon, well known within Danville’s pilot community. Martin Donelson III was a local attorney, first opening offices here in 1976.
This property is located in the Old West End (OWE) National Historic District. One of five National Register districts in Danville, Virginia, the OWE boasts the finest and most concentrated collection of Victorian and Edwardian architecture anywhere in the Commonwealth. But it’s not just the architecture. Located adjacent to our city’s flourishing downtown River District, the Old West End is a community of friendly people with a passion for preservation and restoration. Make your home in our welcoming neighborhood and our just-right city. Come join us.

Thanks to Paul from Friends of the Old West End for sharing these two Danville homes with us.

The photographer was pretty funny: look where Betty Boop’s eyes are focused.
We can always hope that the buyers don’t paint over the exquisite art work she is admiring…LOL!
I can see the potential here, can you?!
A loot of good stuff still here to work with. I have taken on far worse projects than this one, and they turned out great. The only caution I would give, is check into the market and home values in the surrounding area really well. This will be a great indicator of what sort of budget the project deserves. I really got burned once by putting alot of money into a project house (15 years ago), only to find that it is now worth less than I paid for it with over 200,000 in restoration!

Danville, VA must have a ton of old houses in the needing some help category. I’d have to put this one in the “good bones” category as it might need basement to attic attention. There are several decent (but painted over) mantels and at least a pair of pocket doors to work with. The staircase reflects prior use as a rental but could probably be reconfigured back to its original appearance. Low priced with over 3,000 square feet for under $40K but the buyer(s) should be ready to put in a lot of sweat equity to bring out this house’s full potential.
