Here’s a streetview of the Sparta, IL property: https://goo.gl/maps/stgBfq5dKy62
It is a town of about 4,300 about 51 miles southeast of St. Louis. Typical outlying Midwestern small town from streetview appearances. In towns of this size, most neighborhoods tend to be in the good and better category. I’d put this in the good category but there are surely better residential areas in town. I did notice the town is large enough for a Walmart Supercenter and St. Louis is about an hour away. It is a nice house for the modest price.

You’re correct, John — 1 hour and 6 min ……. but it felt like an hour and a half the way Mom drove!! LOL

Thank you for your response, John, and your insights into small-town life. Looking for a place to move to via the internet is such a crapshoot! Am thinking about buying an RV and hitting the road to look at America first hand.

          Jillie D.,
While I was looking around Sparta, I recalled another smaller regional town with a number of historic properties: Pana, Illinois. (about 2 hours drive north of Sparta) I’v always had a soft spot for fixer-uppers and found several properties in streetview that seemed like good prospects. (509 E. 3rd; 511 E. 3rd; 212 E. 2nd, and the mansion grade Capt. John Kitchell 1876 home at 208 Spruce) The former Kitchell home is listed as the Apothecary B&B but doesn’t seem to be so currently. Kitchell was a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. When he passed away, he left a vast fortune (in 1914) behind of over a million dollars. I hasten to add these Pana properties may very well not be for sale but the town seemed favorable in streetview. Your idea of taking an RV and covering a wider geographical area is probably sound provided you have the time and resources to do so. Good luck in your search.

Sparta is a small town in Randolph County, about an hour and a half from St. Louis, MO. My mother lived there until she was 10 years old. They used to have big printing facility where Mom’s cousin’s husband works. He got freebies and they passed them on to us . I don’t believe that the printing plant is there any more. Close by is Baldwin Power Plant, if that’s a place where you could work. Of note, Sparta was the home of Roscoe Misselhorn, an artist who worked in pencil sketches. Also, the train station scene from the movie “In the Heat of the Night” was filmed in Sparta. Friendly little mid-western town.

Thank you, Sarah. Arts, entertainment and non-profit management are more my line. And, of course, historic preservation. Must have a town with live theater. If you know of any, please let me know!

Loving the Ferndale house. My family used to lease pasture land for mama cows near Ferndale. It’s really beautiful there.

The only thing I dislike about that Ferndale home is that it will never be mine. I love everything about it, the inside and outside. Can’t stop returning to the photos and just dreaming and picturing myself living there. Words fail me. Thank you, Kelly, for finding this gem.
