Thank you James@Harrodsburg for sharing this great old Creole style planter’s house with Old House Dreams! It’s a fantastic place which seems to have been battered about and bruised time and again over the years, but is still keeping itself together rather admirably considering. Hope someone sees this and wants to help this strong and sturdy survivor shine again!

Being as I’m an ‘Old Salt’ I have to ask, does the anchor and two naval guns in the street view go with it? If so, the only thing to make this one better is to add a cat! 🙂

Katrina victim, darn it. Hopefully it is not beyond repair. There is also a photo of the house from the gulf side in the NR link. The property’s three acres slope down to the gulf beach. Thanks for the additional links, Kelly.

Prior to the Hurricane of 1947, which took a path similar to Hurricane Katrina, this house sat right on the bluff overlooking the Gulf. It was saved from tumbling into the sea by the efforts of sisters Sissy and Pat Grinstead.

Hopefully the house can find someone with the means to save it once again.

I believe there is a Face Book page for this house. Someone posted to a FB page dedicated to old houses and there were a lot of comments regarding the high price and more comments regarding the home being on the National Register. I was curious so I checked the National Register, and yes it is listed, but wondering if homes had to maintain certain standards or criteria to remain on the register.

“…were a lot of comments regarding the high price and more comments regarding the home being on the National Register.” I find that FB comments is always like that, nothing really different there. 😀

Strong, confident opinions often seem to flow most easily from those who have little to no understanding or familiarity of the subject matter. Such experts thrive on FB. Those pages dedicated to old houses often do as much harm as good by perpetrating myths and misinformation about the houses. On one page dedicated to a particular house I have seen all kinds if outlandish and ridiculous explanations very confidently put forth that have no basis at all in fact, but many people seem to accept it without questioning. I say nothing, and close out the page in disgust and promise myself not to return. The house isnt mine anymore, although it was for 20+ years, so I know the truth. So … beware of FB experts.

You’ve summed up why I’ve quit FB personally although I still have to have the site FB page since that’s how many follow new posts (although they shouldn’t as FB hides most posts.)

That moment when you scroll to the next post and think the house looks familiar before realizing it’s because it IS familiar. I’d thought it was because the style is common around here or something.

I’ve seen this house several times. My best friends have lived in Moss Point and Gautier for years. (It’s pronounced go-SHAY, with the drawl on the AY, not gaw-TEE-ay as the French spelling may lead you to believe. We love French names, and we love mispronouncing them, Dauphin, Joachim, and Belle Fountaine being particular colloquial favorites of mine.) We’re history nerds, so tend to get in the car and wander to historic sites or go sight seeing in general. It has been a couple of years, but I was honestly very surprised at the interior pictures based on what I saw from the road as we were driving by. I had no idea it was in that state, but then again I never really looked at it altogether that hard.

Someone will buy this and give it the Gulf Coast remodel, which is bad, but not as bad as you may think. It will survive. I am very confident based on what I know the community. It just may take awhile.

If anyone here is looking for a project, this home is super close to Biloxi, so you would also gain gorgeous beaches, a strip of casinos, a constant stream of live entertainment, a local theater program, museums, outlet malls, plus you are only an hour or so from New Orleans to the West and Mobile to the East.

I hope someone secures this soon, so an arsonist doesn’t set it ablaze like several other plantation houses in recent years.
