Mount Joy is a historic manor home originally built as a true brick federal by Revolutionary War veteran Matthew Harvey at the southern entrance to the Shenandoah Valley in close proximity to the James River (Town of Buchanan, Botetourt County, Va). At the time of the Civil War the house was owned by Confederate Col. John Anderson (a signer of the Virginia Secession document). Consequently, when the Union Army came up the Valley in 1864 the house (along with a lot of other prominent structures) was burned. The current structure was built on the original foundation in 1906. We have owned the house for the past 15+ years and completely renovated it with an attention to detail to include removing the paint from all of the hardware (transom, door, hinges, window pulls, etc.). The house is 4500 sq. ft. finished with an additional almost 1500 sq. ft. in the unfinished attic (6 large bedrooms/2.5 baths). It sits on 6.02 acres of yard and established pasture on the nicest hilltop lot in the county. It has 360 degree views of both the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains and Looney’s Creek. Mount Joy is close to I81 (but not too close) for easy 30 minute access to Roanoke to the south and Lexington to the north. Buchanan is a quaint village on the James with a reopened town theatre, 1950s pharmacy/soda shop and antique stores with very close access to the Jefferson and Washington National Forest and the Appalachian Trail. The house is approved as a Bed and Breakfast and we currently operate a one bed/one bath Airbnb out of the home. Too much history and features to list here.
