    Wow! Incredibly intact and original-looking. I expect the interior to be a time capsule. So rare to see completely intact historic outbuildings as well…this is ideal for the old house purist who wants to live in a house that is straight out of the Victorian era. It would be almost criminal to go in and totally modernize this one. I believe the date (1898) is also inaccurate-some of the architectural details (Gothic Revival, Italianate) suggest an 1860’s or 1870’s provenance with perhaps some 1890’s updates. It must have originally been a (prosperous) farm now reduced to just a little over an acre. The house also appears to have been added to over the years as many farmhouses were. Like others have expressed, it would be SO nice to see some interior photos-that would also help to date it more accurately as well. Mantels and Staircase newel styles are especially helpful in estimating dates as tastes changed frequently throughout the decades.

      I thought so too (about the build date.) Especially that barn, it screams Gothic Revival.

      Yes, the Gothic Revival elements put this at an earlier build date. And I also agree about the lack of interior photos. It’s always my hope that the realtors don’t show the interiors of homes that are “dated” (original??) because they don’t appeal to a broad spectrum of buyers.

      The house was built by a german carpenter. Its believed he didn’t have much of a farm and instead the barn was his carpenters workshop. So he was a prosperous carpenter, not farmer.

    It’s going to take a miracle to save this one. New construction homes top in the $400’s. Even if you buy this for $150K, you would be over that. Very few large older homes in the area. Maybe a local will make the investment as a show-piece on the main road, but it’s a long shot. Unfortunately, the real estate market almost always trumps preservation, unless George Washington slept there or MLK.

      I beg to differ, Jim. We can’t tell what the home needs simply from the exterior photos. And maybe I’m being naive (probably! ha!) but I honestly can’t fathom putting $250k+ into a house — ANY house. Even if it needs all new “mechanicals” (plumbing & electric), even if it needed a new foundation… That is a crap-ton of money, I just can’t comprehend where you think it would be needed. Perhaps you’re simply referring to this particular city/location?

      I can certainly accept that not every dime we put into old houses will be “worth” the return if/when it comes to resale value, but I’m fairly sure that most old house lovers DO NOT see their homes as financial investments anyway.

    Wow! What a house. In theory Kelly the “Historic” register designation does prevent a tear down. I don’t believe you could get a demo permit without a lenghty review and the house would have to be really far gone structurally etc, but a deep pocket developer will tear it down and pay the fine without any permits. This house is begging to be restored. I would buy it for the barn alone.

    Redfin states this was sold on September 27 2011 for $122, 500.

    They did a great job saving this house, the restoration was perfect not taking away any of the look. One of the best historic houses in the county.
